What does acupuncture actually do during pregnancy?

  • Regulates hormones
  • Reduces nausea and morning sickness symptoms
  • Prepares the cervix for birth as well as mother & baby
  • Reduces muscle tension
  • Helps release hormones like oxytocin, elastin & relaxin.

How often will I need treatments?
Generally once a month until the last month, when we generally recommend weekly treatments, then twice weekly once you hit 40 weeks until bub arrives.

Can I just get acupuncture for induction?
Yes, and ideally you would start fortnightly treatments from 32 weeks (but later is fine too, however, the sooner the better!), then once per week (37, 38, 39, 40). After 40 weeks we suggest two treatments per week until the baby arrives.

How does acupuncture assist in inducing labour?

  • Acupuncture points have been shown to ready the cervix by softening – which helps to reduce the pain
  • Oxytocin is released through various points that assists with bringing on natural labour
  • Studies have shown that the length of days overdue, plus time in labour, can be reduced by receiving acupuncture
  • Muscles are relaxed which helps the baby drop into the correct position
  • Elastin is stimulated and released which softens the tendons, allowing them to stretch in preparation for the birth.
  • No known side effects have been seen which makes this an extremely safe practice for you and your baby.

How long are the appointments?
Every person is different, however we suggest you allow 30-50mins.

Do I need acupuncture after the birth?
During this immensely busy period in your life we do recommend some follow up treatments. Acupuncture can assist you with sleep, stress and any side effects of childbirth such as mastitis, prolapse & assist with milk production. We can also suggest some herbs that can also provide nourishment.

How do I make a booking?
You are welcome to call us on 5531 6461 or alternatively book online here and one of our practitioners would be delighted to assist you in your journey.
