Dr Google: The Dangers of Self Diagnosis

As health professionals, far too often we see people taking information off the internet and from unqualified friends or family and treating it like law. There is high risk associated with self-diagnosis and people who as a result begin treating themselves for an illness or ailment incorrectly or for conditions they may not even have.

Our Naturopath, Stacey Butterfield often deals with patients self-prescribing both natural and over the counter medicines. This can be dangerous for two reasons; the first is often people are unaware of correct dosages to suit their body requirements. The second is that the drug may be causing more harm than good if it is unnecessary in their system. If you are already taking prescribed medications, introducing new ones could cause reactions within your body further worsening your condition or creating new issues. It is so important to be diligent in the consumption of medicine so it is urged that you seek a professional opinion before continuing with self prescribed medicinal choices.

The most important thing to realise is that every person’s body is different and unique and will respond differently to the things we do to treat illness and the medications we take. What works for one person whether it is a friend, family member or someone on the internet does not necessarily mean it will work for you. With years of experience our team have dealt with such a vast variety of conditions and will be able to formulate the best treatment plans to suit your needs. Whether it requires nutritional and medicinal related information, body conditions or even a psychological condition we are here to set you on a path of complete health and well-being.
