Overuse of Antibiotics

Recent reports from the world health organisation show that nine of the most common infectious diseases are becoming resistant to antibiotic treatment. This is due to the alarming overuse of antibiotics with people using them as a quick fix rather than considering long term prevention. At Coastal Natural Therapies, our Naturopath is concerned about the future of infection treatment and advises that natural medicine can in fact prevent the infection returning.

In particular for women who suffer recurring urinary tract infections, research has shown that soon treatment will rely on antibiotic injections as oppose to the current pills. To fully restore your body to health you must first understand what is causing the infection and then employ methods to prevent it. Large amounts of antibiotics are not healthy and as shown are rapidly depleting our immune system.

Also adding to this problem is the prescription of incorrect medication, or the lack of education and misuse of medication. Always ensure that you have all the information about what you are putting into your body.

The World Health Organisation has recognised through research that:

  • More than 50% of all medicines are prescribed, dispensed or sold inappropriately, and half of all patients fail to take medicines correctly.
  • The overuse, underuse or misuse of medicines harms people and wastes resources.antibiotics
  • More than 50% of all countries do not implement basic policies to promote rational use of medicines.
  • A combination of health-care provider education and supervision, consumer education, and an adequate medicines supply is effective in improving the use of medicines, while any of these interventions alone has limited impact.

To find out more about how your prescription medications may be hindering instead of helping you, we advise for you to book in to see our naturopath today.
