Spring Into Summer

In a naturopathic clinic setting the word detox takes on a slightly different meaning to the media driven word most people associate with detox.  Every second of every hour of everyday your body is technically designed to be under a continuous detoxifying cycle.  Whilst diet changes, avoidance of alcohol and caffeine are beneficial to health, they are not the same as undergoing a supervised medical detox program.

In a detox program, a practitioner will evaluate through case taking and necessary pathology testing the biochemical detoxifying pathways that are overactive or underactive.  Symptoms such as food intolerances, heavy metal toxicity, skin disorders, headaches, fatigue, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, diabetes, chemical sensitivities, allergies, and high cholesterol can all be related to detoxifying errors.

If you are in reasonable health a general bowel, kidney, and liver detox program will ensure optimal health maintenance and act like an annual cleanup of the system (like a gas and oil change for a car).  Treatment will utilise a rage of diet changes, herbs, minerals, vitamins and amino acids. dependant on the individual.  An individual 2-week program can be sufficient and by the end of two weeks a patient should feel improvements in overall energy, improved bowel function, less bloating, less gas, improved skin, improved brain cognition and a general sense of well being.

For patients with long term chronic illness a detox program will be designed depending on signs and symptoms and major areas affected but the expected time frame will be anywhere from 4 weeks to 3 months.
