Asperger’s
Asperger’s, which has more recently been classified as autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), is characterised by significant difficulties in the following areas:
- Social interaction – difficulties with, or the inability to develop friendships that are consistent with the child’s developmental level and maturity.
- Difficulties in understanding emotions in others as well as their own. However, can erupt and show extreme emotions over minor matters.
- The inability to read or display non-verbal behaviours, such as facial expressions, eye contact and body language that are appropriate in social interactions.
- The inability to change routines without disruption or distress. Follows rigid and repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests.
- Has poor motor skills, has difficulties in learning to ride a bike, catch a ball etc.
- Is highly intelligent.
Please note the above points are aspects of Asperger’s – they do not provide a diagnosis. However, they will give you a few key points to look for.
If you have concerns for your child a complete assessment is recommended. Our Gold Coast psychologist, Dr Christine Salisbury, is able to provide a diagnostic and psychological assessment. For further information and prices, please contact Coastal Natural Therapies Gold Coast on 07 5531 6461.
ADHD
Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterised by symptoms including difficulties in focusing on tasks and paying attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Children with ADHD can experience learning difficulties and behavioral problems.
At times all children can display symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity and lack of attention. However, these behaviors occur regularly for children with ADHD and are more severe. ADHD symptoms occur early in life and are usually noticeable between the ages of 3 and 6 years.
A thorough assessment needs to be conducted to diagnose ADHD. This is often performed jointly between a Pediatrician and Mental Health Professional (Psychologist). Dr Christine Salisbury is highly experienced in performing thorough assessments to diagnose childhood disorders.
Therapy assists in the reduction of symptoms. Education and training are also provided for parents to support the management of behaviors.
